Overview

Benchmarking serves as a mechanism to measure energy performance of a building over time, relative to other similar buildings or to modeled simulations. Reports issued by cities, counties, and states that compile benchmarking data promote transparency and allow for evaluation of the progress of benchmarking and transparency programs, including assessments of impacts and identification of energy efficiency opportunities. This Energy Benchmarking Analysis Report from Seattle, Washington provides a replicable example of a comprehensive report that includes details on program accomplishments, data analysis methodologies, building characteristics, and energy consumption trends, among other topics. Seattle’s benchmarking and transparency program maintained over 99% data submission compliance in recent years and, for buildings reporting data from 2014 to 2016, total energy use declined by 3.7%.
