Walmart: South Euclid, OH

Background

Store #2362 in South Euclid, OH, was selected by Walmart to serve as a platform to test and showcase technologies that go above and beyond what is required to achieve LEED^® Silver certification. All buildings at the South Euclid, OH development site were required to be LEED certified by agreement between the city and the developer. This facility includes space for retail sales, a non-refrigerated warehouse area for shipping/distribution activities, a refrigerated warehouse area, office space, circulation space and a kitchen.

Solutions

Walmart achieved a 37% reduction in source energy use intensity by implementing a series of lighting and space conditioning energy efficiency measures. The store is 100% LED-lit, and tests the use of doors on medium temperature refrigerated cases to reduce refrigeration load. The building also utilizes reclaimed heat from the refrigeration system to supplement heat in both the HVAC and hot water systems.

Walmart has installed three off-the-shelf chillers operating in parallel to cool a 35% glycol solution, which serves the store’s medium-temperature display cases. The chiller controls are modified to allow them to operate at a lower temperature (~20°F). To maximize system efficiency, Walmart staged the three chillers to meet the attached load, with two chillers operating at or near 100% (thereby operating at their most efficient condition), while the remaining chiller(s) operates at part-load as required.

A successful implementation of this system offers many advantages:

Reduced first costs and energy costs over a traditional medium-temperature direct expansion compressor rack system.
Reduced installation and maintenance costs (no need for copper piping to the medium-temperature display cases, chillers could be “valved off” for replacement while keeping the system running, etc.).
Reduced refrigerant leakage and fewer CO2 equivalent emissions – thanks to a smaller overall refrigerant charge.
Opportunity to pursue a rating for the system under the AHRI 550 standard. Current medium temperature refrigeration systems operate outside existing regulations on performance.
