Commonwealth of Massachusetts: North Central Correctional Institute at Gardner
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create clean energy jobs, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts introduced the Accelerated Energy Program (AEP), which is implementing energy efficiency projects across more than 60 million square feet of state buildings. The 28-building campus at the North Central Correctional Institute at Gardner (NCCI) just completed upgrades to the existing high pressure steam heating system, which relies on #6 fuel oil for heat and hot water, in addition to other building envelope and thermal improvements.
MoreOriginally built in the late 1800’s as a sanitarium and working farm, the NCCI at Gardner, as it is now known, is located on twenty acres of hillside near the Gardner/Westminster town line and was opened in 1981. The complex has undergone numerous renovations and upgrades throughout its 100+- year history.
LessThe project’s main improvements involved the replacement of 125 psi high- pressure steam oil boilers with 50 psi steam natural gas boilers, thereby eliminating the use of #6 fuel oil and replacing it with cleaner burning natural gas. Additional measures included upgrades to windows, new attic insulation, conversion of old steam dryers to efficient, natural gas dryers, and the addition of several satellite natural gas boilers.
MoreNCCI Gardner also has two 1.65 MW wind turbines onsite that were installed as part of another energy project. These turbines are projected to generate over 9 million kWh of renewable energy per year.
LessIn addition to the energy improvements, the facility also featured a number of water conservation measures including conversions to low flow fixtures for over 140 showerheads, 200 faucets and 50 urinals and 300 water closets.
