Deep Winter Greenhouse Operation Guide

Ogema Organics, a partner organization of Better Buildings Workforce Accelerator partner Elevate, works to provide food security and food sovereignty for the community on the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota. Ogema requested technical assistance for the design, construction, and operation of Deep Winter Greenhouses (DWGs), which optimize passive solar gain and thermal energy storage to grow crops in the winter with minimal combustion energy inputs. The University of Minnesota Extension, which developed the DWG concept, worked with Ogema to provide consulting and create a guide for ongoing DWG operations.
