Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Fact Sheet Series: Colleges and Universities

College and university campuses consist of buildings with widely varied uses including housing, education, research, retail sales, offices, health care, and food services – each with their own unique needs for electrical and thermal energy. Many colleges already have dedicated onsite boilers or electrical power sources to meet these demands. Combined heat and power (CHP) systems can improve the efficiency of campus heating and electrical power systems, reduce the need to purchase heating fuel or grid electricity, and improve energy resilience.
