2023 Better Buildings Progress Report

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings & Better Plants Initiative is a market transformation program through which partners collaboratively pursue ambitious energy, waste, water, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals. They share their real-world pathways for achieving significant savings in their buildings, industrial facilities, and multifamily homes. In doing so, they inspire others, demonstrate strategies to overcome common barriers, and catalyze significant progress in energy efficiency and decarbonization. The leadership of Better Buildings & Better Plants Initiative partners strengthens our economy, advances energy independence, and propels us forward to a clean energy future. The 900+ private and public sector Better Buildings & Better Plants partners have collectively saved more than 3.1 quadrillion British thermal units (QBtu) of energy since the start of the program. This amounts to a savings of more than $18.5 billion and 189 million metric tons of CO₂. Partners also have reduced their water use by 16.2 billion gallons.
