Better Climate Challenge   Better Buildings Alliance

Since 2015, Target has made investments in energy-efficient initiatives for more than 1,000 stores, including natural refrigerants, LED lightbulbs, solar, electrified HVAC and more. In March 2022, Target completed the conversion of its Vista, California store to become Target’s first net zero energy store. Target anticipates the store will generate up to 10% more renewable energy than needed per year to support its operations – furthering Target's journey toward net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Through the Better Climate Challenge, Target will work with the Department of Energy and its partners to mitigate the impacts of climate change by participating in peer exchange programs and workshops. Target's goal is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% below 2017 levels by 2030, and to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources for global operations by 2030.
