State of Maine

The State of Maine owns or leases over 14,000,000 square feet of highly varied property including 4,000,000+ square feet of office space and 3,000,000+ square feet of workshops, garages, and storage facilities. The portfolio includes educational facilities, hospitals, military installations, correctional facilities, and many more building types spread across Maine's 35,000 square miles. In addition, the state centrally owns and operates around 2,000 light-duty vehicles and is committed to transitioning the fleet to clean vehicles. To make progress toward achieving its emissions reduction and renewable energy targets, the State of Maine launched its Lead by Example program in 2019, setting targets to align state agency action with the state's four-year climate action plan, Maine Won't Wait.

In early 2024, the Governor issued an executive order that directs the State to commit to goals that put Maine on a pathway to decarbonize buildings statewide. The governor's order also includes goals for EV charging stations at public buildings, zero-emissions heating and cooling, and overall reductions in emissions and energy use in state buildings .
