Santa Fe County, NM

Santa Fe County is home to the New Mexico State Capital and serves a population of over 150,000 residents across 1,911 square miles. Managing a portfolio of 140 buildings and a fleet of over 600 light and medium-duty vehicles, Santa Fe County has taken active steps to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency on a governmental and community-wide scale.

Santa Fe County pledged:

In 2017, in alignment with the Paris Agreement, Santa Fe County committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In 2021, the county joined “Race to Zero” pledging to reduce emissions from the building sector by 60% across County facilities by 2025, and countywide by 2030.
In 2024, Santa Fe County joined the Better Buildings Challenge with 2018 as its baseline year.

Current emissions reduction activities are guided by the County Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan and Countywide Climate Action Plan. Santa Fe County has installed over 1.9 MW of renewable energy, sources 50% of electricity from renewable resources, and has completed energy efficiency retrofits. Emissions reductions will be primarily achieved through the continued use of energy service contracts to facilitate energy efficiency upgrades, the installation of behind-the-meter PV, and water conservation upgrades.
