Orange County, FL

Orange County, Florida, is home to more than 1.4 million residents and is a popular tourist destination. Its building portfolio is spread across the County and includes 184 larger, owned buildings, representing more than 12 million sq. ft. in area. As part of Orange County’s commitment to the Better Buildings Challenge, the County outlined capital investment plans for the upcoming five years, which will include large investments in energy reduction strategies, including HVAC, BAS, electrical system upgrades, transitions to LED lighting, and a wide variety of envelope-sealing strategies. In addition, many solar energy projects are being evaluated for percentage offset, cost, and return on investment, especially within the water/wastewater treatment infrastructure, which is 365, 24/7 usage.

The County began its commitment to developing a phased approach to increase sustainability and commitment in 2021 after establishing its Sustainable Operations and Resilience Action Plan. This plan takes a lead-by-example approach and sets internal targets to reduce energy usage, expand sources of clean, renewable electricity supply, conserve and protect water, reduce petroleum usage, transition fleet vehicles to electric, divert more waste, preserve natural lands, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
