As a Better Building’s Challenge Partner, they are committed as an organization to reducing energy consumption by 20% by 2023. As part of New York City’s Greener Greater Buildings Plan, the Mayor’s Office created a Carbon Challenge for Hospitals through which participating institutions committed to a 30 percent greenhouse gas reduction by 2018. Since Montefiore’s baseline year of 2007, they had effectively reduced their emissions by 24 percent through 2015. Plans to achieve the 30 percent reduction target include addressing inefficiencies in building design, lighting, mechanical systems and waste generation. Specifically, a recent installation of a new energy efficient industrial washer and will conserve electricity, gas and water. Montefiore is the only hospital in NYC to have in-house laundry service, with over 13 million lbs. of laundry in 2015.

Part of Montefiore’s mission is to advance the health of the communities they serve, at Montefiore they feel that cannot be accomplished without addressing sustainability, environmental and community health, and their place within the healthcare setting. Montefiore’s facilities team is continually working to provide our patients and staff with an indoor environment that facilitates the healing process. This group of individuals truly understands the connection between a person’s thermal comfort and the ability to work and or heal.
