Marriott International (“Marriott”) is a worldwide operator, franchisor, and licensor of hotel, residential, timeshare, and other lodging properties under numerous brand names at different price and service points. Consistent with Marriott’s focus on management, franchising, and licensing, Marriott owns or leases very few of its lodging properties (less than one percent of its portfolio). Marriott has more than 30 brands and nearly 8,800 properties in 139 countries and territories.

Sustainability is a large focus of Marriott’s operations. Marriott has formed multiple sustainability teams across the globe to address the growing need for environmental stewardship. Marriott is committed to the sustainability goals in accordance with its approved Science Based Target (“SBT”) submission. The company has committed to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Marriott also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, waste generated in operations, employee commuting, and franchises 27.5% by 2030 from a 2019 base year, and that 22% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2028. Most importantly, Marriott commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050, reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year and reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year.

Marriott International is dedicated to leading the hospitality industry in climate action and sustainability. Its participation in the Department of Energy’s Better Climate Challenge begets this commitment, aligning with Marriott's overarching goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by 2050. Since committing to its SBT goals in 2022, Marriott is relatively young along its sustainability journey. However, Marriott has outlined the following priority strategies to meet their goals:

Enhancing Energy Efficiency: Marriott is prioritizing measures to enhance energy efficiency across its managed and franchised properties. This includes expanding the use of building automation systems and increasing the frequency and depth of energy audits.
Investment in Renewable Energy: To significantly decrease our reliance on fossil fuels, Marriott is accelerating investment in renewable energy solutions. This includes large-scale solar installations at suitable properties.
Engaging its Value Chain: Marriott plans to encourage their suppliers to adopt science-based targets for emission reductions. This aligns with its internal goal that by 2028, 22% of suppliers by emissions to set science-based targets.
Innovative Technologies and Practices: Marriott is committed to exploring and investing in cutting-edge technologies to further reduce our carbon footprint. This includes piloting projects for advanced HVAC/building automation systems, updating its Global Design standards with greater energy efficiency standards for new building development, and exploring new technologies with energy savings (e.g., compost digesters and AI to measure supply chain emissions).
Employee and Guest Engagement: Marriott will enhance its training programs for employees to include best practices in energy conservation and water & waste reduction. Additionally, it will launch guest awareness campaigns to involve them actively in our sustainability initiatives.
Retrofitting Initiatives: Over the next decade, Marriott will undertake significant retrofitting of existing properties to meet new energy standards. This will involve replacing outdated systems with energy-efficient models, enhancing insulation, and installing energy-efficient assets throughout properties.
Performance Tracking and Reporting: Marriott will utilize advanced data analytics to track energy use and emissions reductions, implementing a transparent reporting system to communicate progress against our BCC goals both internally and externally.
Sustainability Certification: Marriott aims to increase the number of properties certified under global sustainability standards such as LEED and BREEAM, ensuring compliance with the highest environmental performance benchmarks.
