Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation
|20%Reduction in Energy Intensity|
Founded in 1977, three years after a grassroots mobilization halted a controversial interstate extension project through its neighborhoods, and after an 18-month planning process involving 150 residents, the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) incorporated to create and increase employment opportunities, improve community conditions, create housing, assist entrepreneurs and pursue other community development goals. Today JPNDC offers programs and direct services to help low-income households set and achieve financial goals through its Family Prosperity Initiative, its Early Childhood Education Program, and Small Business Assistance.
JPNDC currently operates 470 units of permanently affordably rental housing, the Brewery Small Business Center, two smaller retail locations, a 20,000 square foot green core surrounded by a campus of housing and office space, and a community garden. JPNDC is working with Peabody Properties and Paul Sullivan Housing (The Pine Street Inn) to capture opportunities to reduce energy and water use in its residential portfolio. To date through the Low-Income Energy Affordability Network, JPNDC and Peabody have captured over $1,000,000 in high efficiency and renewable technologies. JPNDC looks forward to building on these results via its BBC. JPNDC’s commitment to reduce energy use by 20 percent over the next 10 years.
