Hackensack Meridian Health

Hackensack Meridian Health is a 775 bed non-for-profit teaching hospital that serves as the flagship of Hackensack University Health Network. Energy and sustainability are embedded in the decision making process across the campus.  The energy committee is chaired by the Director of Plant Operations and the Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center.

Hackensack Meridian Health has developed a series of tools and processes in its operations to help measure progress on energy and water use. These tools help identify areas of great opportunity for energy efficiency improvement and upgrades.  One such tool is a Building Automation System (BAS) upgrade that is being implementing at one of the higher energy use Medical Office Buildings. This BAS has a target goal of reducing energy usage on site by 20% for this building alone.

In addition to this planned upgrade, Hackensack Meridian Health is an active participant in PSE&G’s Carbon Abatement Program, which has provided the opportunity and finances to upgrade lighting systems throughout the hospital, upgrade the efficiency of the central plant through mechanical upgrades, and replace outdated chillers with more energy efficient models. Through continued participation in this program, Hackensack Meridian Health will pursue additional upgrades and retrofits to bring them to their campus-wide 20% reduction goal.
