Genentech is targeting aggressive reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions arising from its operations on the path to true Zero Emissions by 2050. Between 2015 and 2019, Genentech reduced GHG emissions from onsite energy use by 30% despite the expansion of its site operations. To achieve further reductions, Genentech is implementing energy conservation projects in its buildings, optimizing HVAC systems and converting to electric heat pumps, as well as transitioning sites to renewable energy.
Genentech’s 60-building South San Francisco headquarters has transitioned 100% of its grid power to CO2-free. The headquarters is also home to one of the largest corporate solar installations (6MW) on the San Francisco Bay Area peninsula. In 2022, Genentech unveiled its most sustainable manufacturing facility yet, utilizing single-use technology to significantly reduce the energy and water consumption of its production processes. These activities contribute to Genentech’s broader milestone goal to reduce total scope 1 and 2 emissions from both its onsite operations and vehicle fleet by 75% from 2019 to 2029.
