Gary Housing Authority (Gary, IN)

The Gary Housing Authority (GHA) was established in 1938 to provide decent, safe, and sanitary housing for families in a way that promotes serviceability, economy, efficiency, and stability of the housing developments and the economic and social well‐being of the residents. The agency owns and operates nearly 1,422 public housing units, administers an ongoing public housing rehabilitation program, and manages a Section 8 Housing Assistance Program that provides assistance to over 1,752 households in the City of Gary. GHA has administered the Section 8 Housing Assistance Program since 1974 to allow families to rent housing on the private market while having their rent subsidized.

The Gary Housing Authority is excited about its commitment to reduce its energy intensity by 20% within ten years through the Better Buildings Challenge. The GHA annually receives approximately $3.5 Million in Capital Funds from HUD each year. GHA’s goal is to ensure that every capital improvement project incorporates appropriate Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) in a way that maximizes energy savings and minimizes disruption to building occupants. GHA is planning several capital improvement projects in 2018, including high-rise building envelope improvements, capital rehabilitation, and appliance upgrades.
