Elme Communities (formerly known as Washington Real Estate Investment Trust or WashREIT) is committed to elevating what home can be for middle-income renters by providing a higher level of quality, service, and experience. The company is a multifamily real estate investment trust that owns and operates approximately 8,900 apartment homes in the Washington, DC metro and the Sunbelt, and approximately 300,000 square feet of commercial space. Focused on providing quality, affordable homes to a deep, solid, and underserved base of mid-market demand, Elme Communities is building long-term value for shareholders.
Under their old, diversified portfolio, Elme had achieved reductions in both energy and GHG emissions. Now, as a multifamily organization, they have created new goals of reducing energy use intensity by 20% and our Scope 1 & 2 emissions 50% by 2030 (from a 2021 baseline).

Elme committed to reducing their emissions to Net Zero by 2050, with a 50% reduction by 2030. Sustainability and ESG are core focuses of the organization across all departments and levels. Elme prioritizes operational efficiency and on-site GHG reduction, identify opportunities for on-site renewables, work with utilities and supplier for off-site zero-carbon energy procurement, and then review offsets as a potential final option. Elme utilizes programs like ENERGY STAR, LEED, BREEAM, and GRESB to help benchmark performance and demonstrate achievement.
