The Columbia Association (CA) is a nonprofit public service corporation dedicated to providing the highest level of service and amenities to the 100,000 residents of Columbia, Maryland. CA offers recreational, cultural, and community services including fitness facilities, an ice rink, golf courses, more than 20 neighborhood and community centers, and 3,500 acres of open space. CA is comprised of more than 250 full-time staff led by a Board of Directors elected by the community.
The energy management program implemented by the Columbia Association has been a fundamental aspect of its operations since it was launched in 2012. In the last three years, significant progress has been made in integrating energy management into basic business practices, undertaking dozens of energy efficiency projects, and empowering the broader Columbia, MD community to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. CA’s energy management program is built on oversight by a full-time Energy Manager, adherence to best practices established by the U.S. DOE and U.S. EPA, support across the highest levels of the organization, and dedicated funding for energy management projects such as lighting upgrades and HVAC replacements. CA’s internal energy management program is complimented by robust outreach to residents and businesses that are members of the Association, individuals who regularly use our facilities, and the greater Columbia community.
