City of Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City, Missouri is the largest city in Missouri by population and area, with more than 500,000 people calling the city home. Kansas City adopted the Climate Protection and Resiliency Plan in September, 2022 which is centered on 6 main strategic areas: mobility, energy supply, natural systems, homes and buildings, food, waste and materials. Within that plan, Kansas City set a GHG emissions reduction goal of climate neutral municipal operations by 2030 and citywide by 2040. Kansas City also earned LEED Gold certification in the LEED for Cities rating system for local governments in May 2023.

The City of Kansas City joined the Better Climate Challenge in 2023 with a baseline year of 2019 to support the city's efforts to reach carbon neutrality in municipal operations. Kansas City will target scope 1 and 2 emissions across a portfolio of 15.3 million square feet, and seek to reach climate neutrality by 2030. Kansas City plans to continue reducing operational emissions by expanding the city's solar generation, changing the city's fleet to electric vehicles, converting roughly 90% of municipal streetlights to more energy efficient LED fixtures, and through the adoption and use of resilient and efficient building codes such as the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code. Additionally, Kansas City is part of bi-state collaborative led by the Metropolitan Energy Center that was recently awarded DOE-BTO funding to support resilient and efficient building codes.
