Christopher Newport University

Christopher Newport University (CNU) is a four-year public university that enrolls 4,500 students in academic programs in the liberal arts and sciences. CNU’s 260-acre campus includes more than 30 buildings spanning over 3 million square feet, including educational and administrative buildings, science research labs, full-service dining and catering facilities, student housing, and more.

In 2025, CNU deployed its Strategic Compass, a five year plan designed to guide and advance the university’s vision and mission. One of the goals of the Strategic Compass is to proactively enhance campus environmental sustainability by reducing energy intensity and water usage and incorporating renewables into CNU’s energy portfolio. CNU has made substantial investments in campus facilities by upgrading HVAC equipment and building automation systems, installing LED lighting and occupancy sensors, and streamlining facility use occupancy schedules. Aligning with its internal efforts, CNU has established an energy reduction goal of 20% by 2035 as a partner in the Better Buildings Challenge.
