Charleston Water System

Established in 1917, Charleston Water System is an ISO 14001 certified public water and wastewater utility serving 455 square miles of the Greater Charleston area. Through its core competencies of the treatment and distribution of potable water and the collection and treatment of wastewater, CWS serves 116,000 water accounts and 54,000 wastewater accounts. On the water side, CWS operates a 118 MGD Water Treatment plant serving its retail and wholesale customers through 1758 miles of pipe. On the wastewater side, CWS utilizes 884 miles of pipe and tunnel systems to collect wastewater and send it under the Charleston harbor to a 36 MGD Wastewater Treatment plant.
