California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI), founded in 2002, is the newest campus in the California State University system. Nestled against the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, CSUCI is comprised of 814 acres and more than 1.3 million square feet of building space. The university is dedicated to sustainability and has retained a gold STARS rating since 2015. It was also the first public university in California to earn the Bee Campus USA designation. In 2022, through a Power Purchase Agreement, a 3.75-megawatt solar array was installed, generating enough power to meet 68% of the annual electricity needed for the campus.

California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI) is committed to taking action to curb climate change, striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Despite being a growing campus, the university has prioritized reducing overall energy use and improving efficiency. Looking toward 2040, CSUCI will employ several strategies to reduce emissions, including phasing out natural gas equipment, installing energy storage to leverage onsite renewables, and ensuring all new construction and major renovations are designed to be 10% better than the California building code. The university will also continue to invest in energy efficiency measures, such as lighting retrofits, building envelope improvements, and retrocommissioning.
