AvalonBay Communities, Inc. is an equity real estate investment trust (REIT) in the business of developing, redeveloping, acquiring, and managing multifamily communities in New England, the New York/New Jersey metro area, the Mid-Atlantic, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern and Southern California, as well as in expansion regions of Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, NC; Southeast Florida; Dallas and Austin, TX; and Denver, CO. As of December 31, 2024, the company owned or held a direct or indirect ownership interest in more than 300 apartment communities containing 94,000 apartment homes in 14 markets, of which 17 communities were under development.

AvalonBay’s emissions reduction program is divided between strategies for existing buildings and new developments, but central to both is the implementation of onsite renewables and energy efficiency improvements. Since the majority of the company’s emissions stem from resident utility consumption, they concluded that enhancing in-unit efficiency and fostering resident engagement are critical to achieving their goals.

To achieve these outcomes, AvalonBay is prioritizing the collective action of the entire organization.
