As a partner of the Better Buildings Challenge, 3M met its initial goal by improving energy intensity by 25% cumulatively over nine years. The company has set a new goal of improving energy intensity by an additional 30% over ten years. Through the Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge, 3M will maintain a focus on transparency around a capital set aside for energy efficiency projects and highlight an innovative recognition program that rewards top-performing plants.
3M received a 2021 Better Project Award for implementing a real-time, batteryless steam trap cloud monitoring system that saves 10.6 million pounds of steam per year.
3M received a 2022 Better Practice Award for developing a corporate Energy Manual—Manual 81—to outline minimum design requirements for new spaces, processes, and utility systems intended for use by 3M and its approved suppliers, and implemented projects have delivered savings of 6,676,000 in MMBtu and 272,000 tons in CO2.
3M received a 2023 Better Practice Award for converting lead-acid battery powered industrial vehicles (PIVs) to lithium-ion PIVs at sites, improving reliabilty and safety, lowering maintenance costs, and realizing energy and greenhouse gas reductions or more than 250,000 kWh and more than 140 metric tons of CO2e in the initial pilot.
