Industrial Technology Validation Program Participation

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Industrial Technology Validation program aims to strengthen US manufacturer competitiveness and resiliency by accelerating the development of next generation technologies, helping scale emerging technologies, and catalyzing market adoption.

Led by Experts

For each selected technology, a team of experts led by IEDO, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will design a measurement and verification (M&V) plan, conduct on-site date collection and testing at the host sites, analyze performance, and draft a field validation report.

A Unique Opportunity

"Bringing these emerging technologies out of the laboratory and onto the factory floor is a critical part of reaching our industrial decarbonization goals. The Industrial Technology Validation program serves as a key conduit for industry to partner with the DOE and the National Labs to de-risk emerging technologies by validating their performance in real-world conditions."

-Dr. Avi Shultz, Director of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO)

Evaluation Criteria

Emerging technologies include applications of equipment, hardware, software, systems, or innovations used in manufacturing, wastewater treatment, data centers, mining, or clean rooms and should be at one of following development stages:

• Pre-or early commercial technology
• Commercial technology in a new use case
• Broad deployment applicability, but not yet widely used or accepted

Technologies with the potential for widespread impact and scalability will be prioritized during selection. Additional factors considered include innovation, performance, cost savings, technical risk, and the level of effort required for measurement and verification.

Expected Contributions For Participating

• Project details and costs will be negotiated between technology provider and host site
• DOE will not provide direct funding to participate in the evaluation

Host Site Responsibilities

  • Teams up with a technology provider of their choosing
  • Provides the host site for testing
  • Continued engagement for the duration of the study
  • Provides input to labs on test bed design, project plans, and evaluation reports in a timely manner
  • Shares data and information on impacted systems as needed to conduct the analysis

Technology Provider Responsibilities

  • Teams up with a host site of their choosing
  • Provides and installs the technology for validation
  • Continued engagement for the duration of the study
  • Provides input to labs on test bed design, project plans, and evaluation reports in a timely manner
  • Shares data and information on impacted systems as needed to conduct the analysis
