Starbucks Coffee Company: Energy performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Starbucks Coffee Company's portfolio consists of more than 5,500 buildings and 11 million square feet. Starbucks has improved energy performance by 14% from a 2009 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 25%. Energy savings has been achieved through LED lighting retrofits, use of energy management systems, proactive asset replacement, and new store improvements.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Starbucks Coffee Company has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at 3000 of its properties. Improvements were counterbalanced by growth associated with incremental equipment driven by its food program and new initiatives.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Starbucks Coffee Company is continually evaluating opportunities to improve energy performance of its properties and equipment.
