Portland Public Schools: Energy performance

Energy Performance
Cumulative (vs. Baseline)18%
Annual (2020)21%

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. PPS's portfolio consists of 90 buildings and 8 million square feet.

*PPS has improved energy performance by 18% from a 2009 baseline. Energy consumption during 2020 was significantly lower than a typical year since COVID-19 disruptions resulted in temporary building closures and reduced occupancy for much of the year.  Energy savings have been achieved both prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 by implementing LED lighting retrofits across a dozen properties and focusing on low-cost opportunities, such as HVAC tune-ups and building energy shutdowns.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. PPS has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at more than 16 of its properties. There are 50 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These properties may be targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. PPS portfolio consists mostly of properties with baseline EUIs ranging from 75 to 150 kBtu/sq. ft. The vast majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2009. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
