Portland Public Schools: Energy performance

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Portland Public Schools' portfolio consists of more than 80 buildings and 8 million square feet. Partner has increased energy use intensiy by 3% fom a 2009 baseline and is working towards a goal of 20% by 2022.  PPS saw an improvement in energy savings from the 2017 year, reducing district-wide EUI by 4% in 2018. The district achieved these savings through several LED ligting upgrades, HVAC controls upgrades, and by participating in a Strategic Energy Management program, which focuses on low-no cost operational measures and staff/student engagement.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. PPS has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at 13 of its properties. There are 46 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These properties may be targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. PPS portfolio consists mostly of properties with baseline EUIs ranging from 75 to 150 kBtu/sq. ft. The vast majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2009. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
