PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. NYPH's portfolio consists of 5 campuses and nearly 8 million square feet. Since 2011, NYPH has improved energy performance by 5%. Energy savings have been achieved by performing retrocommissioning and energy audits that prioritized energy conservation measures. Implemented recommendations have included lighting retrofits - installing LEDs across all facilities, reducing boiler plant steam pressures, installing boiler economizers, repairing steam traps and insulating steam lines, HVAC upgrades, chiller plant optimization, replacing aging air handling units, cooling towers and adding variable frequency drives. NYPH also engages hospital employees and the operations and maintenance teams through energy awareness programs focusing on low-cost opportunities. 

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY PROPERTY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. NYPH has achieved energy performance improvement at two of its properties, with one property showing improvement of greater than 15% over the baseline.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. NYPH's portfolio consists of facilities with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 250 to 500 kBtu/sq. ft. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
