PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. The Macy's portfolio consists of nearly 800 properties and 137 million square feet. Since 2010, Macy's has improved energy performance by 23%, surpassing its goal of 20% savings by 2021. Energy savings has been achieved by implementing lighting retrofits across all properties, HVAC upgrades at the largest properties, and a continuous process of utilizing energy information systems to gain visibility of the energy used in the buildings, identify opportunities, and implement strategies to address those opportunities.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY PROPERTY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Macy's has achieved an average energy performance improvement of greater than 23% for the properties in its portfolio. There are 22 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These properties have been targeted for identifyng possible future energy efficiency improvements.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. The Macy's portfolio consists mostly of properties with baseline EUIs ranging from 50 to 200 kBtu/sq. ft. The vast majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2010. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
