Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. The Kohl's portfolio consists of more than 1,100 buildings and over 113 million square feet. Since 2008, Kohl's has improved energy performance by 27%, surpassing its original goal of 20% by 2020 and making progress toward its new goal of 30% improvement by 2025. Energy savings has been achieved through lighting upgrades, integration of Energy Management Systems, and installation of solar photovoltaic systems on more than 160 locations.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Kohl's has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at over 800 properties. There are a number of properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. These properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Kohl's has four prototypes ranging from 35,000 to 92,000 square feet in size. Areas of opportunity include take-over locations, two story and mall locations, corporate offices, and distribution centers. Within this narrower distribution, there are opportunities to target more energy intensive properties.
