PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Huntsville's portfolio consists of more than 60 buildings and 5 million square feet. Huntsville has improved energy performance by 0.4% from a 2013 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 20% by 2025.  Energy savings has been achieved by implementing lighting retrofits on specific properties, establishing an Enterprise Building Automation Warroom to monitor building operations for improved efficiency, and replacing older inefficient schools with new construction LEED designed schools.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY PROPERTY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy.  Huntsville has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at eight of its properties. There are 15 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. The Enterprise Building Automation Warroom will provide direct insight into these properties for future energy efficiency improvements.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings.  Huntsville's portfolio consists of properties with with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 100 to 250 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2013. The school districts capital improvement and Energy Master plans are focused on a Retrofit/Renovate/Replace approach to focus efforts on improving energy efficiency with a focus on low performing buildings.
