Houston Independent School District, TX: Energy performance

Cumulative (vs. Baseline)2%
Annual (2016)0%

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Houston Independent School District`s portfolio consists of 279 buildings and 30 million square feet. Since 2012, Houston Independent School District has improved energy performance by 2%. Energy savings have been achieved by reducing HVAC operation schedules across all properties, implementing HVAC upgrades at campuses with low equipment performance, and behavioral programs focused on reducing our carbon footprint.

Houston Independent School District has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 10% at 87 of its properties. There are 90 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI.  These properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Houston Independent School District`s portfolio consists of properties with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 100 to 300 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2012. The properties showing decreased performance are targets for future projects and will be prioritized based on impact of improvement. The District plans to repurpose the energy cost savings to fund future energy conservation measures.
