Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Fairfax County Public School's portfolio consists of 220 buildings and 26.5 million square feet. Fairfax CPS has improved energy performance by 18% from a 2014 baseline, making progress towards a goal of 20% by 2024.  Energy savings have been achieved through renovations with higher efficiency HVAC, lighting and shell construction along with other building and operational improvements including HVAC upgrades, efficient operation, and behavioral changes by staff and students.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy.  Fairfax CPS has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 15% at 105 of its properties. There are 7 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI.  These properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Fairfax CPS's portfolio consists of properties with  a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 100 to 200 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of properties have shown energy improvement since 2014.  Some of the properties located near or below the 0% axis are schools undergoing multiyear renovations and/or expansions.  Typically FCPS has 10 to 15 in that condition.  Other schools near or below the 0% axis present good opportunities for further savings.
