CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc.: Energy performance

Energy Performance
Cumulative (vs. Baseline)23%
Annual (2016)9%

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. CKE's portfolio consists of more than 241 buildings and 843,000 square feet. Since 2011, CKE has decreased energy usage by 23%. CKE has made several efforts to decrease energy use, including implementing operational changes, such as opening and closing checklists, and capital improvements, such as the installation of LED lighting for parking areas.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. CKE has achieved energy improvements of 10% or more at 150 of its properties. CKE achieved these savings through more efficient operations, installation of energy management systems, LED lighting retrofits, and new energy efficient broiler replacement.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. CKE's portfolio consists of properties with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are from 800 to 2400 kBtu/sq. ft. The properties located near or below the 0% axis present good opportunities for further savings. In addition, normalizing for differences such as variances in operating hours will help CKE identify which stores truly are efficiency leaders in order to share best practices.
