Bentley Mills: Energy performance

Energy Performance
Cummulative (vs. Baseline)26%
Annual (2018)7%

Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI), and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Bentley Mills portfolio comprises of its facility in LA, California that includes  manufacturing, testing, warehousing and corporate offices. With an energy intensity improvement of 26.2% since its baseline year of 2014, Bentley Mills has meet its 25% reduction in energy intensity target in 2018, six year prior to its target year.

Bentley Mills manufactures two types of carpets, broadloom (roll) carpets and carpet tile.  Existing energy consumption data doesn't suggest a significant difference in energy intensity between manufacturing the two products. Thus, the energy intensity is calculated by using the total square foot output. Most of the electricity and natural gas consumed at the facility is bought from the utilities while a small percentage of the electricity is generated on-site through a PV system on the east side of the facility. Energy intensity is currently calculated by dividing total primary energy used at the facility by the total square foot production. Even though the total primary energy has gone up at the facility from the baseline year, Bentley Mills produced proportionally more units leading to a improvement in energy intensity.
