PORTFOLIO ENERGY PERFORMANCE

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. Arlington's portfolio consists of nearly 80 buildings totaling over 2 million square feet. Since 2009, Arlington has improved energy performance by 18%. Energy savings have been achieved through cost-effective upgrades to lighting, building controls, and HVAC equipment, as well as operational diligence and employee education of best practices during occupancy.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE BY PROPERTY

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all properties can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. Arlington has achieved energy performance improvement of greater than 15% at 22 of its properties. There are also 17 properties that have experienced an increase in Source EUI. Those lagging properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements or renovation/replacement/demolition.

IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. Arlington’s building inventory is widely varied in building type. Some are inherently energy-intensive (e.g. health properties and those with data centers), while other properties with lower energy-intensity still receive attention due to their large size and utility costs.
