ACTION Housing: Energy performance

Cumulative (vs. Baseline)-1%
Annual (2016)-1%
Portfolio Summary: Whole Building Data by Reporting Period

Better Buildings Challenge partners strive to report whole-building data for all properties within their portfolio. Often, Multifamily partners face the added challenge of collecting data from tenant-paid utility accounts. The Better Buildings Challenge is working with Multifamily partners and utility companies to improve the data collection and reporting process. While this important work continues, Multifamily partners are being recognized for their successes within those properties that are reporting whole-building data. ACTION-Housing's portfolio consists of roughly 40 properties, and ~1 million square feet. For the 2016 reporting period, ACTION Housing's reported whole-building data for 50% of its portfolio.

ACTION Housing

Better Buildings Challenge Partners strive to decrease portfolio-wide source energy use intensity (EUI) and to increase the percent improvement compared to a set baseline. ACTION-Housing, Inc.’s portfolio consists of more than 55 buildings and over 1.2 million square feet. ACTION-Housing has successfully benchmarked its housing portfolio through support of HUD’s Better Building Challenge. ACTION-Housing is progressing toward a goal of 20% by 2023 by conducting energy audits and weatherization activities and using taking advantage of local utility rebate programs.

Looking at the percent improvement in energy performance across all facilities can provide insight into how an organization is saving energy. ACTION-Housing has achieved over 15% energy performance improvement at its Mackey Lofts community, a rehabilitated factory building that was converted into affordable housing for residents with sight and hearing impairments. There were two properties that experienced an increase in Source EUI. These properties have been targeted for future energy efficiency improvements.

Property-level energy performance metrics, including EUI and percent improvement to date, are critical to track progress over time and identify opportunities for additional energy savings. ACTION-Housing’s portfolio consists of properties with a wide range of baseline EUI values, most of which are between 70 and 140 kBtu/sq. ft. The majority of properties have shown energy improvements since 2015. The properties located near or below the 0% axis may present good opportunities for further savings.
