Better Buildings Affiliates Recognize Healthcare Partners for their Leadership in Sustainability

By Better Buildings Beat Team on Apr 10, 2022

Better Buildings Affiliates are NGOs, associations, and nonprofits that identify, recruit, and support organizations interested in improving energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions across their U.S. building portfolios. Through the Better Buildings Initiative, Better Buildings healthcare partners have the opportunity to collaborate with leading healthcare industry affiliates. Three healthcare affiliates have recognized Better Buildings partners for their leadership in sustainability during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ASHE RECOGNIZES BETTER BUILDINGS PARTNERS WITH ENERGY TO CARE AWARDS

The American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) helps further health systems’ energy efficiency and decarbonization goals. Through the Energy to Care Award, ASHE recognizes organizations that accomplish their sustainability goals and help pave the way for other healthcare organizations to support healthy, equitable, and resilient environments and communities. In 2020, ASHE awarded the Energy to Care Award to Better Buildings partners Ascension and Mayo Clinic. Ascension has implemented retrofits at several medical centers, including Showcase Projects Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and Saint Thomas Hospital, to improve the health system’s overall energy efficiency. Mayo Clinic has performed similar upgrades on their Rochester, Minnesota Campus.

PRACTICE GREENHEALTH AWARDS BETTER BUILDINGS PARTNERS FOR SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE IN SUSTAINABILITY

Practice Greenhealth provides sustainable solutions to hospitals and health systems across the U.S. They present the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Award each year to healthcare facilities and health systems for their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability achievements. In 2021, Practice Greenhealth recognized the following Better Buildings healthcare partners: Atlantic Health Systems, Hackensack Meridian Health, Mayo Clinic, Montefiore Medical Center, UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital, University of Utah Health, and UW Health.

In 2020, Atlantic Health System received three Practice Greenhealth awards: Top 25 Environmental Excellence, Greenhealth Partner for Change, and System for Change. They were also awarded the System for Change Award in 2021 for collaborating to set system-wide sustainability goals, track performance data, benchmark, and support intra-organizational learning and implementation within their institutions.

HEALTH CARE WITHOUT HARM CELEBRATES CLIMATE CHAMPIONS

Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) seeks to transform healthcare worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint, becomes a community anchor for sustainability, and leads the global movement for environmental health and justice. Each year HCWH awards healthcare institutions with the Health Care Climate Challenge award. Under the broader categories of mitigation, resilience, and leadership, healthcare systems can be awarded for greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency, renewable energy, non-energy greenhouse gas reduction, climate resiliency, and climate leadership. Better Buildings partners Ascension, Cleveland Clinic, Gundersen Health Systems, and Kaiser Permanente have all been recognized in recent years for advocating and implementing climate-smart solutions.
