2019 Building Tours: The Pearl
On July 9, D.C.-area properties opened their doors to 2019 Summit attendees to showcase their stand-out energy, water, and renewable efficiency measures. Below are highlights from one of the tours.
Attendees for the tour of The Pearl, The Tower Companies’ new multifamily property in Silver Spring, Maryland, got a first-hand look at a building designed to maximize efficiency and resident wellness. The Pearl is a LEED Gold property and the first-ever multifamily property to be Fitwel certified. Jonathan Bauer, Sustainability Manager for The Tower Companies, led the tour and highlighted the unique features of the property: A 2‐story fitness center with floor to ceiling windows for maximum outdoor lighting; multiple green roofs designed to manage stormwater, with one incorporating a 3.4 kW solar system uniquely racked into the roof; a 100-rack bike room; and the 5,000-square-foot Urban Farm to share fresh vegetables with residents and for use during healthy cooking demonstrations in the building’s open kitchen. The tour also included a peek into one of the building’s units, which are equipped with efficient appliances and lighting, low-flow water systems, and large windows to minimize the need for additional lighting.
