2019 Building Tours: National Landing

By Better Buildings Beat Team on Jul 31, 2019

On July 9, D.C.-area properties opened their doors to 2019 Summit attendees to showcase their stand-out energy, water, and renewable efficiency measures. Below are highlights from one of the tours.

In November 2018, Amazon announced the selection of JBG SMITH as its partner to house and develop a new headquarters location at National Landing in Arlington, Va. JBG SMITH, represented by Jay Corbalis, Vice President of Public Affairs, and Amy Jacks, Sustainability Analyst, led attendees on a behind-the-scenes tour of the firm’s vision for National Landing. The tour began at the developer’s Tenant Service Center, where a dedicated team led by Jonathan Gritz, Director of Energy, monitors real-time energy usage, controls building systems, and immediately responds to spikes in energy consumption, across all buildings in their National Landing portfolio. This centralized system acts as a one-stop shop for building monitoring and control. JBG SMITH has been able to roll out new HVAC upstart schedules and set-point rules across all owned buildings, which resulted in the savings of thousands of dollars per building, per year.

As the walking tour continued, Mr. Corbalis highlighted National Landing’s central and easily accessible location, as well as its adjacency to Reagan National Airport.  Abigail Young, from the architecture and design firm, Gensler, then met our group to provide a glimpse of the energy and sustainability features of one of JBG SMITH’s latest development projects, currently pursuing LEED Silver certification. The tour ended at the JBG SMITH Marketing Center, where attendees were able to see visualizations of the future of National Landing. Joan Kelsch and Jessica Abralind from the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services described Arlington’s Green Building Incentive Program, which provides a density bonus for building projects that meet LEED and energy performance specifications. As a LEED for Communities Platinum recipient and leader in sustainability, Arlington is working with JBG SMITH to continue this legacy in National Landing.
