Background

Simpson College is a small, private liberal arts college with an interest in providing its students with a “living laboratory” of how an organization can be an example of both economic and environmental stewardship. Like many private colleges, Simpson enjoys an historic campus; however, the lovely atmosphere requires a consistent focus on maintenance and upgrades to maintain facilities.

Due to ongoing operational issues, the college was seeking solutions that met dual goals of being fiscally prudent and providing strong examples of environmental sustainability. Administrators sought assistance from to the Iowa Energy Bank, which oversees a successful energy savings initiative in Iowa’s public and non-profit facilities.

Solutions

Measures to improve the energy efficiency of Simpson College include decentralizing heating and cooling systems, installing occupancy sensors and energy-efficient windows, as well as retrofitting lighting campus wide. As a result of these efforts, the State of Iowa expects to realize an annual savings of 282,492 kWh and 94,864 therms at the campus. The project is set to be completed in October 2014.

The project will be divided into two phases. Phase 1 will include improvements to Hillman Hall, College Hall/Old Chapel, Art Center and Mary Berry Hall. Phase 2 efforts will focus on Smith Chapel, Robertson Hall, Wallace Hall and Carver Science Center.
